What do I wear to the Opera?
My girlfriend and I are planning on attending the Metropolitan opera and I'm not sure what the proper attire is. I wouldn't even think about wearing jeans, but I'm curious to know what I should wear. Is a suit the norm for men? If so, any specific color? I assume women should wear a dress of some sort, but is a strapless dress not appropriate? Thanks for your help.
A little more info. It could be a Saturday afternoon or a Saturday night performance. Is there a difference in attire for the performances? Also, this is the Metropolitan Opera performing at Lincoln Center in NYC.
Assuming it's not opening night, go for a dressy casual look: dress slacks, a fine-gauge sweater and a sports coat. Of course, a suit would be fine, too, and in that case consider a dark grey or navy.
Women would be fine in dark tailored trousers, a skirt and blouse, or a dress. A strapless dress would be entirely appropriate. You and your date want to be on the same page, though -- one shouldn't outdress the other.
